Known to be hardy, strong and durable, the Jeep brand is quite often sought-after by those who enjoy the outdoors. So, it’s no surprise that the new Jeep Commander is also more suited for the outdoors than as a family car. But, the Jeep Commander is the brand’s largest product and seat seven people easily, so it’s quite a versatile mid-sized SUV.

The 2008 Jeep Commander has some significant changes, which makes it more performance-enhanced and safer. The all-new commander is powered by two choices – one V-6 or two V-8 engines. Available in three trims, the Sport trim has a 210-hp, 3.7 litre V6, the Limited has a 290-hp, flex-fuel 4.7 litre V8 (optionally available for the Sport) and the highest grade Overland has a 330-hp, 5.7 litre V8 Hemi (available optionally with the Limited). Both 2WD and 4WD versions have five-speed automatic transmission systems.
The standard safety features available in the 2008 Jeep Commander include front, side and overhead impact airbags, anti-lock brakes, rollover mitigation and stability control. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Association rates the Commander as 5/5 for both driver and passenger collision safety.

Although the new Jeep Commander is bigger and taller than most mid-sized SUVs in the market, it doesn’t have a ultra luxurious interior. The optional third row seating is not spacious enough for adults, but can accommodate children comfortably. The SUV’s fuel efficiency is also somewhat of an issue, with a fuel economy range between 19 mpg in the highway and 14 mpg in city areas. The boxy shape is also a put-off for some potential buyers.
In comparison to the 2007 model, the three main modifications for the new 2008 Jeep Commander include the 4.7 litre V8 engine, entertainment/navigation system and some additional safety features.
